Thermoset composite materials have a long and successful history in the electrical market. Dating back more than 50 years, many of the first electrical cabinets made of thermoset composites are still in use. Thermoset composite materials exhibit excellent dielectric strength due to the network of cross-linked molecules that create a rigid structure, where molecules are held in place by chemical bonds. Compounds made with thermoset binders, therefore, have the ability to maintain both physical and electrical properties under mechanical loads during prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures. Offering superior dielectric properties, excellent electrical & thermal insulation, heat resistance, and high flame resistance, thermoset composites are often the materials of choice for insulating components of electrical systems.

Thermoset materials are used to make utility poles, electricity line carriers / arms, telecommunication masts, radar masts, antenna, electrical switches, boxes, housings, cable trays and cabinets. Many electrical designers also specify them for insulating components of switchgear, circuit breakers, standoff insulators, and motor brush holders.

These are some of the applications where the exclusive benefits of FRP are being exploited.

The Filament Winding Process is the most common for the manufacture of utility poles, telecommunication masts, radar masts. Electricity line carriers / cross arms, telescopic operating & earthing rods, discharge rods, switch sticks, antenna, cable trays, ladders, etc. are usually assembled from Pultruded FRP profiles. SMC is used for manufacture of high-strength electrical components, meter boxes, equipment cabinets and a variety of structural parts. Due to its ease of handling and sheet size, SMC is often the only choice for larger parts.

The major factors now encouraging the use of FRP in the Electrical Industry are their inherent corrosion resistance, UV resistance, environmental safety and low installation costs.
